You run 10, 40 or 200 stores, and Podium handles your texts and reviews, maybe your card payments too. The renewal is coming up, or the bill grew with the chain. The real choice is bigger than which inbox to buy: keep a tool your store teams run, or have the work done for each store.
We build one of the options, so here is our view up front. If you want every store’s reviews answered, its regulars texted and its loyalty points run, with a person approving each step, Ocally is built for that. Each store gets its own plan, Kai does the daily work, and two people from Ocally come with it. Ocally does not process payments, so keep your POS or a payments tool for that.
Other tools fit some cases better. Birdeye is the closest like-for-like swap, payments included. Klaviyo and Attentive are built for big text and email campaigns. NiceJob is a low-cost review tool.
What Podium does well
Podium puts a store’s customer conversations in one inbox: texts, calls, website chat, social messages and reviews 3. Its AI Employee answers texts, webchats, missed calls and social messages in under 60 seconds, day and night 3. Review invites go out by text right after checkout, with reminders and AI-written replies 3. It also sells its own phones, text campaigns and payments: payment links by text, card readers, tap to pay and financing 1,4.
Podium says more than 10,000 retailers use it 3, and small teams on Reddit say its review requests lift Google review counts quickly 22. The retail stores it names as a fit are furniture, appliance, mattress and jewelry 1, where a sale often starts as a question by text. If your stores sell that way, and you want texts, calls, reviews and payments in one place with AI answering around the clock, Podium is a strong pick.
Podium pricing and cost today
Podium publishes two plan prices on its pricing page [1]:
- Core, $399 a month. The inbox, review management with AI responses, basic automations and reports, a customer success manager and onboarding, with 250 bulk message credits a month and 5 phone numbers.
- Pro, $599 a month. Adds AI Concierge, an AI reputation specialist, AI call summaries, lead routing, surveys, picture texts, 500 credits, 15 numbers and lower processing fees.
- Signature, custom pricing. Adds advanced multi-location management, account migration, custom processing rates and quarterly business reviews.
The page doesn’t say whether plan prices are per location, and notes that prices vary with industry, integrations, volume and carrier fees 1. On top come a $5 monthly 10DLC fee (the carrier registration for business texting) for every US location; phone seats at $25 to $30 per user a month, plus a $500 network optimization fee per location; $5 a month per extra number; and AI Employee, an add-on with no published price 1. Card processing rates aren’t published 1,4.
What Podium really costs: the tool plus the people
A tool’s price leaves out the people who run it. Someone sends the review invites, checks the AI’s replies, writes the campaigns and follows up on each store’s inbox. That is staff hours, an agency, or store managers’ evenings. Ocally’s price includes the work: Kai drafts it, a growth specialist checks it, and your team approves.
A chain also needs more than one job done. Ocally’s plan covers listings, reviews, local search, social and AI answers at every store, so the fair comparison is the same work bought the usual way: Podium for its part, the other tools and agencies a chain pays for the rest, and the staff time to run them. Every default below is the low end of a published price. Podium’s lines are its public prices, with the Pro plan counted once for all stores because Podium doesn’t say whether it’s per location 1; if your quote prices it per store, your number is far higher. Type your own quotes over any line.

Every default is the low end of a published price; type your own quotes over them. A staff hour is $54: the median pay of market research analysts and marketing specialists, $37.87 an hour (May 2025), plus benefits, which are 30% of what employers spend on pay (June 2026)25,26. The staff and approval hours are our estimates. Ocally’s price is customized, from $500 per location a month. Defaults from: Moz Local pricing; Peec AI pricing; RankAI: multi-location local SEO cost guide (June 2026); Cloud Campaign: social media management pricing guide (July 2025); WebFX: GEO pricing (May 2026); BLS: market research analysts and marketing specialists, pay (May 2025); BLS: employer costs for employee compensation (June 2026).
At 25 stores, even at the cheapest published prices, the same work costs about $15,744 a month bought as tools, agencies and staff hours ($630 a store), against about $13,963 for Ocally with your team’s approval time ($559 a store). That’s about $1,782 a month less with Ocally, $21,378 a year. At mid-range agency prices, the gap grows by thousands a month 27. For texts and reviews alone, Podium costs less than Ocally, and we would rather you hear that from us. Ocally also doesn’t process payments, so keep a payments tool if that’s why you use Podium.
What most buyers don’t know about Podium
All of these come from Podium’s pricing page and its Terms of Service (version 6.4, effective October 1, 2026).
- You pay for 12 months, then 12 more. The first term renews on its own for another 12 months unless you email written notice of non-renewal to Podium support at least 30 days before it ends. Signing commits you to the whole term, and you can’t cancel early except for cause 2. Reviewers on Trustpilot describe restrictive renewals and feeling locked in, alongside many 5-star reviews 24; owners on Reddit say the contract and $300+ a month cover more than they use 23.
- Prices can rise at renewal, and usage rates at any time. Podium may raise fees on 45 days’ written notice, effective at your next term, and change its published usage rates on 30 days’ notice, whatever your term. Continued use counts as accepting 2.
- Usage has limits, and overages bill on their own. Automations include 4,000 message segments per location a month, AI messaging 1,500 segments, Voice AI 300 minutes and each phone user 1,000 minutes. Above that you pay Podium’s then-current rates, charged automatically the next month 1,2. Bulk message credits expire monthly; when they run out, campaigns stop until next month unless you buy more 1.
- The chain features sit in the quote-only plan. Advanced multi-location management, account migration and custom processing rates are listed in Signature. AI Employee, the part that answers around the clock, is an add-on with no published price 1.
- Your data has a 30-day exit window. When the term ends, you lose access to your account. You can ask in writing for an export within 30 days, as a paid professional services job, and after that Podium may delete your data 2. Export contacts, conversations and review history before you send notice.
- It’s built around leads. A grocery, pet or apparel chain lives more on regulars than on inquiries. One apparel retailer on Capterra says Podium feels built for service businesses; reviewers there like the easy texting and repeat complaints about price and slow support 5. And if your stores already take cards through a POS, Podium’s payments add a second processor with unpublished rates 1,4.
The best Podium alternatives for retail chains
Six options, in order of fit for a retail chain of 10 or more stores. If reviews matter more than texting, see Birdeye alternatives and the guide to reputation management software.
1. Ocally (that’s us)
Best for: retail chains and franchise brands with 10 or more stores that want reviews, texts and loyalty worked store by store, with a person approving what goes out.
Ocally is AI growth for retail chains. Kai, its AI growth agent, learns each store and works its list every day:
- Reviews. He reads every store’s reviews on Google, Yelp, Facebook, Tripadvisor and Trustpilot, puts the urgent ones first, drafts each reply from that store’s own facts, posts the ones you approve and checks they went live word for word. After a real visit, he asks customers who agreed to hear from you for a review (reviews).
- Texts and loyalty. He keeps one customer list across your stores with consent on record, writes texts and emails for real moments like a size back in stock, drafts the answer when a customer texts back, and runs points from real sales (messaging and loyalty).
- The rest of the store. The same plan updates listings on Google, Apple, Bing, Yelp and Facebook (listings), checks what ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews say about each store (AI answers), and covers local search, social and store routines.
Each store gets its own goals and plan. Nothing public and no customer message goes out without a yes, and every action keeps a receipt. Two people come with it: a growth engineer who connects your POS, listings and tools, and a growth specialist who checks Kai’s work before it reaches you. It replaces the review and texting tool, the agency hours for replies and campaigns, and store managers’ evenings spent on reviews and texts.
Pricing: customized, from $500 per location a month. The first consultation is free, and the growth engineer and growth specialist are on Ocally to start 15.
What it doesn’t do: Ocally does not process payments: no payment links, card readers or financing. Keep your POS or a payments tool for that. Kai doesn’t answer phone calls, and his replies wait for a person’s yes, so he isn’t for instant, unattended answers at 9 p.m.
Where Ocally isn’t the fit: Ocally is young, works with design partners in Southern California and publishes no customers or results yet. If you want software only, a tool costs less up front; the calculator above shows by how much.
2. Birdeye
Best for: multi-location brands that want the closest like-for-like swap, with reviews, texting and payments on one platform.
Birdeye sells itself to multi-location brands, retail among them 6. It covers reviews, listings, social posts, AI search and surveys, with one inbox for text, email, web and social messages 6,7. Birdeye Payments takes payments by text, QR code, card reader and website, for one flat fee per transaction 8.
Pricing: quote only, by the locations you deploy 9.
One honest limit: with no public price, you can’t compare it with Podium until you’ve had a sales call.
3. Klaviyo
Best for: chains whose main use of Podium is text and email campaigns to a big customer list.
Klaviyo sends email, texts and app messages, with sign-up forms, segments and, on its Marketing plan, loyalty rewards 10. It reads in-store sales through POS integrations; the Lightspeed R-Series one syncs purchases every hour 12.
Pricing: public, by list size. Free up to 250 active profiles; at 25,000 profiles, Klaviyo estimates $400 a month for Email and $575 for Marketing 10. Texts are a separate plan, and since July 13, 2026 each message is billed by channel and country 11.
One honest limit: its plans don’t include store-level Google review management or payments 10.
4. Attentive
Best for: large retail brands that send campaign texts at high volume.
Attentive lists retail and ecommerce first among its industries 14. It sends texts (SMS, MMS and RCS), email and push messages, with automated journeys, TCPA compliance tools and a dedicated support team on every plan 13.
Pricing: quote only, by list size, messages, channels and AI tools, with a free trial 13.
One honest limit: it’s a campaign platform. Its pricing page lists no review tools and no payments 13.
5. Thryv
Best for: small, service-style businesses and franchise systems that want one low-cost app with payments.
Hub by Thryv, its setup for multi-location businesses and franchises, combines a CRM, scheduling, invoicing, payments, one inbox and review management, for 200+ locations 17. ThryvPay starts at 2.9% plus 30 cents online and 2.6% plus 30 cents in person, with no monthly fee 18.
Pricing: Starter is $99 a month and Signature $399 on monthly billing, 15% less yearly, both with AI review management. Hub by Thryv goes through a consultation 16,17.
One honest limit: Thryv says ThryvPay is designed for service-based businesses, unlike processors made for retail 18.
6. NiceJob
Best for: a lean review tool, when review requests are the only part of Podium you use.
NiceJob sends review requests by text and email, with review widgets and a staff leaderboard. Pro adds AI review replies, referrals, email campaigns and NPS surveys 19.
Pricing: Starter $75 a month and Pro $125, with no contracts and a free trial. Franchise pricing is custom 19.
One honest limit: its features are written around service jobs, and its plans list no two-way texting inbox or payments 19.
Also on Podium competitor lists
Broadly says it’s built for owner-operated local businesses, with plans from $399 to $999 a month, and sends franchise and multi-location brands to its parent company, Vendasta 20. Weave is built for healthcare practices and starts at $199 a month 21.

Why chains choose Ocally
- Each store gets its own plan. Goals, work and results are set per store and measured from its own starting point, so the store that needs the most help gets it.
- Kai does the work. He drafts every review reply, text and campaign from each store’s facts, so your team approves instead of writing from a blank inbox.
- Two people come with it. A growth engineer connects your systems, and a growth specialist checks Kai’s work before it reaches you.
- Your yes, your data. Every reply, post and message waits for approval and keeps a receipt. Each business gets its own isolated platform and database, and Ocally doesn’t train AI models on your data.
- One plan instead of a stack. Listings, reviews, local search, AI answers, social, messaging and store routines run from the same facts about each store.
The fairest test is one store: bring the one with the most unanswered reviews, and compare what Kai would do with what your team does today.
How to choose: a checklist for the demo
Before any demo, list which parts of Podium each store used last month. Most chains lean on two or three. Then bring this list to every call:
- A written quote at your exact store count, with every per-location and per-user fee.
- Contract length, renewal, price increases and the notice date, in writing.
- Usage limits and overage rates for messages, AI and phone minutes.
- Whether AI replies go out without a person’s yes, and whether head office can approve before they post.
- Whether each store’s review replies use that store’s own facts.
- How texting consent is recorded, checked before each send, and removed when someone replies STOP.
- If you take payments: the processing rate in writing.
- How you export contacts, conversations and review history if you leave, and what it costs.
- Who on their side does the work each week, and what your store managers still do.
If reviews are the sore spot, our guide to removing Google reviews, and what Google won’t remove has a weekly log built for 20 stores.

Questions
How much does Podium cost?
Podium lists Core at $399 a month and Pro at $599 a month; Signature is by quote 1. It doesn’t say whether plan prices are per location. On top come a $5 monthly texting fee per US location, phone seats at $25 to $30 per user a month, a $500 network optimization fee per location for phones, and $5 a month per extra number. Card processing rates aren’t published 1.
Does Podium have a contract?
Yes. Unless your order says otherwise, the first term is 12 months and renews on its own for another 12. To stop it, email written notice of non-renewal to [email protected] at least 30 days before the term ends. Cancelling early still leaves you owing the whole term, and fees can rise at renewal on 45 days’ notice 2. Put the notice date in your calendar the day you sign.
What is the best Podium alternative for multi-location retail?
For a chain of 10 or more stores that wants reviews, texts and loyalty worked store by store, with a person approving each one, Ocally fits, but it doesn’t process payments 15. For a like-for-like swap of reviews, texting and payments, Birdeye is the closest, priced by quote 7,8,9. For text campaigns to a large list, Klaviyo publishes its prices and Attentive quotes 10,13.
Is Ocally cheaper than Podium?
For texts and reviews alone, no: Podium Pro is $599 a month plus $5 per US location for texting 1, and Ocally starts at $500 per location a month 15. For the work a chain needs done, yes. At 25 stores, Podium plus listings, local search, social and AI answers bought as tools and agencies, and the staff hours to run them, cost about $15,700 a month at the cheapest published prices, against about $14,000 for Ocally 25,26,27. Ocally doesn’t process payments.
Who are Podium’s competitors?
The names that come up most are Birdeye, Thryv, NiceJob, Broadly and Weave, plus text campaign platforms like Klaviyo and Attentive. Each is built for a different buyer: Birdeye for multi-location brands, Thryv, NiceJob and Broadly for small service businesses, Weave for healthcare practices, and Klaviyo and Attentive for brands texting and emailing large customer lists 6,10,14,16,19,20,21.
Which Podium alternatives handle payments?
Birdeye Payments takes payments by text, QR code, card reader and website, for one flat fee per transaction 8. Thryv’s ThryvPay starts at 2.9% plus 30 cents online and 2.6% plus 30 cents in person, with no monthly fee 18. Ocally does not process payments. If your stores already take cards through a POS, ask whether it can send payment links before you add another processor.
