Google says the store opens at 10 on Black Friday. The sign on the door says 6. The shopper who trusted Google shows up at 10, and the TVs on the flyer are gone. Or the other way around: on Thanksgiving, Google says open and the door says closed.
A holiday hours sign fixes the door. It doesn’t fix Google, Apple Maps, Yelp, Bing, Facebook or your store page. And this season, if nobody answers a suggested edit within 4 days, Google may publish it when your website or other public information backs it up 1,2. This guide gives you two door signs with the 2026 dates, and a one-page checklist to put the same hours on every listing.
Why holiday hours go wrong at chains
Head office decides the hours in October. A memo goes out. Each store manager prints a holiday hours sign for the door, and someone is supposed to update the listings.
That’s where it breaks. Each store shows its hours in at least six places: Google, Apple Maps, Yelp, Bing, Facebook and its page on your website. For 20 stores, that’s 120 places that must agree, and the store manager only walks past one of them.
Shoppers don’t care which one is official. They believe the first one they see, which is often the map on their phone.
So the rule is simple: write the sign first, then copy its exact dates and times into every listing.
The 2026 holiday dates to set now
Google lists all six of these as holidays for US profiles 3. Set each one, even on days you keep regular hours: Google’s help says it’s a good idea to confirm hours for official holidays, even when they’re the same as usual 4.
| Date | Holiday |
|---|---|
| Thursday, Nov 26 | Thanksgiving |
| Friday, Nov 27 | Black Friday |
| Thursday, Dec 24 | Christmas Eve |
| Friday, Dec 25 | Christmas |
| Thursday, Dec 31 | New Year’s Eve |
| Friday, Jan 1, 2027 | New Year’s Day |
Veterans Day (Wednesday, Nov 11) is on the list too 3. Small Business Saturday (Nov 28) isn’t, and Boxing Day (Dec 26) is listed only for North Carolina, South Carolina and Texas 3. If your hours change on those days, set them anyway.
Why so early? Bing says an update to hours can take 7 to 12 days to process, plus more time to show up 5. Start in the first week of November and even the slowest listing catches up.
- Fri, Nov 6Thanksgiving week hours set on every listing. Bing is the slow one.
- Mon, Nov 16Thanksgiving sign up in the door. Start checking for suggested edits twice a week.
- Tue, Dec 1December hours set on every listing.
- Mon, Dec 14December sign up in the door.
- Mon, Jan 4Signs down. Check that regular hours show everywhere again.
The holiday hours sign: two templates that match your listings
A good sign answers one question: will the door be open when I get there? Copy a template, fill in the brackets from your hours sheet, and print it big enough to read from the parking lot.
[Store name] on [Street] HOLIDAY HOURS Wednesday, Nov 25: [10 AM to 8 PM] Thursday, Nov 26 (Thanksgiving): [Closed] Friday, Nov 27 (Black Friday): [6 AM to 10 PM] Saturday, Nov 28: [9 AM to 9 PM] Sunday, Nov 29: [11 AM to 6 PM] Regular hours return Monday, Nov 30. [We're closed on Thanksgiving so our team can be with their families.] Same hours on Google, Apple Maps and [yourbrand.com/stores/street].
[Store name] on [Street] HOLIDAY HOURS Thursday, Dec 24 (Christmas Eve): [9 AM to 5 PM] Friday, Dec 25 (Christmas Day): [Closed] Saturday, Dec 26: [10 AM to 7 PM] Thursday, Dec 31 (New Year's Eve): [9 AM to 6 PM] Friday, Jan 1 (New Year's Day): [Closed] All other days: regular hours, [10 AM to 8 PM]. Same hours on Google, Apple Maps and [yourbrand.com/stores/street]. Happy holidays from all of us at [Store name].
What makes these work:
- Weekday and date together. “Thursday, Nov 26” leaves nothing to work out.
- Exact times, or the word Closed. “Closing early” makes people guess. “5 PM” doesn’t.
- Which store. Sign photos get shared. The street keeps yours from being mistaken for the store across town.
- When regular hours return, so nobody has to call and ask.
- The same facts as the listings. If the sign says 6 AM to 10 PM, so do Google, Apple Maps and Yelp. Each listing formats times its own way, but the dates, times and closed days must match.
Put the sign up about ten days before the holiday, in the door and at the register.
Google Business Profile: how to set holiday hours
Google calls them special hours. Here are the steps as Google’s help page gives them [4]:
- Go to your Business Profile and select Edit profile, then Hours.
- Next to Special hours, select Edit.
- Pick a date. Review confirms a date Google suggests; Add a date sets your own.
- For a closed day, keep the Closed box checked. For an open day, uncheck it and enter the times.
- Select Save.
Two catches from the same page. Special hours only show if the profile is set to “Open with main hours.” And they cover up to 6 days in a row; for 7 or more days closed, Google says to mark the business temporarily closed instead 4.
If you skip it, Google says a warning may appear on your profile on the holidays it lists, telling shoppers your hours might differ 3. That gives a shopper choosing between two stores a reason to pick the other one.
For 10 or more stores, Business Profile Manager takes a spreadsheet, so you can set every store in one upload 6. For holiday hours you only need two columns, the store code and Special hours, written like this, with x for closed [4]:
2026-11-26: x, 2026-11-27: 06:00-22:00
Google’s help pages warn about three ways an upload goes wrong:
- An empty column erases data. A column heading with nothing under it deletes the existing info for that field 4. Delete every column you aren’t changing.
- Lost zeros. Spreadsheet apps can turn store code 0004 into 4, and Google may treat it as a new business 6.
- Shifted rows. One badly deleted cell can slide values onto the wrong store 6. Download your current locations first, edit that file, and read the Preview changes summary before you select Apply 6.
Apple Maps, Yelp, Bing, Facebook and your store page
Apple Maps. Listings live in Apple Business, which replaced Apple Business Connect in April 7. Sign in, choose Brands, then Locations, select the store, edit Special hours, and select Save 8. Holiday hours go in as temporary hours with a start and end date 9. Apple’s rule to remember: enter the hours you are open, and mark fully closed days as closed 9. Apple’s help describes editing one location at a time 8, so budget a few minutes per store.
Yelp. Log in to Yelp for Business on a computer or in the app, open Business Information (Biz Info in the app), and find Add special hours under Operation hours 10. Confirm the suggested holidays or add your own days, one day at a time. Shoppers then see a note at the top of your Yelp page 10.
Bing. Many chains sync Bing Places from Google. If yours do, Bing says you can’t edit those listings in Bing: change Google, and the sync carries it over on the schedule you chose, weekly, biweekly or monthly 11. On a monthly sync, a Nov 6 change may miss Thanksgiving, so switch to weekly for the season. Bing’s help doesn’t describe a separate holiday field, so open one listing and check what your dashboard offers.
Facebook. Facebook’s help page covers a Page’s regular hours (About, then Details, then Hours) and says nothing about holiday dates 12. Don’t change regular hours for one day; someone will forget to change them back. Post a photo of the sign a week ahead, with its words as the caption.
Your store page. This one matters more than it looks. When nobody answers a suggested edit, Google may publish it if public information, “such as your business website,” backs it up 1. Apple asks that place card hours match your official website whenever possible 9. So your site is the tiebreaker. Put the holiday hours at the top of each store page, in the sign’s exact words.
If your pages carry hours in structured data (the code search engines read), Google’s guide marks dated hours with validFrom and validThrough, and a closed day with opens and closes both set to 00:00 13. Hand that line to whoever runs the site.
After you post: catch suggested edits within 4 days
Anyone can suggest an edit to a Google profile, including a shopper who saw last year’s hours somewhere. When an edit needs your review, Google says you may get an email or a notice in the product, and you have 4 days to accept or reject it 1. Search Engine Roundtable spotted that wording on Sep 23, 2026 2.
Some edits don’t wait at all. Google says it may apply user edits without review when they’re needed to meet its policies 1.
So during the season, check every profile twice a week, say Monday and Thursday. Info changed by Google shows in blue in the profile editor, with a notice at the top of the page 1. Reject what’s wrong, then fix where it came from, which is often an old store page or a stale listing elsewhere.
Apple works the other way around. If a shopper reports that a store shown as open was closed, Apple reviews it, may edit your place card, and emails your account’s administrators and anyone who manages locations 14. Make sure someone reads those emails in December.
Setting holiday hours for 20 stores without mistakes
When one person sets hours for 20 stores, most of the risk is in the copying. A few habits that help:
- One hours sheet, one row per store. Store code, address and a column for each date. The signs, the Google upload and the store pages all come from it.
- Flag the exceptions first. Mall stores often follow the mall’s hours. Some states add their own days: Google’s list even shows a state holiday in Georgia on Nov 27 3.
- Ask each store manager to check, not to type. Send each store its row and ask for two photos: the sign on the door, and the store on Google Maps on their phone. It catches the row you pasted one line too low.
- Spot check as a shopper. The day before each holiday, look up three stores on Google Maps and Apple Maps. Pick different stores each time.
- Keep a log of date, store, platform and who changed what. When a manager says “Google was wrong,” you’ll know whether it was the upload or a suggested edit.
This is also the work Kai, Ocally’s AI growth agent, does store by store: he keeps every listing and store page on the same hours, sends each store its checklist, and changes nothing without your yes.
The one-page holiday hours checklist
Paste this into the holiday memo. Run it once per store, or once per district with a column for each store.
Before: by Nov 6 for Thanksgiving, by Dec 1 for December
- Hours sheet filled: every store, every date from Nov 25 to Jan 1, exceptions flagged
- Door sign filled from the sheet and checked by the store manager
- Google Business Profile: special hours for every holiday, including days with regular hours 4
- Google: profile set to Open with main hours 4
- Apple Business: special hours for every date, place card preview checked 9
- Yelp: special hours added, Upcoming special hours list checked 10
- Bing Places: Google sync set to weekly, or hours edited in Bing, 7 to 12 days allowed 5,11
- Facebook: regular hours right, sign photo and words posted a week ahead 12
- Store page: holiday hours at the top in the sign’s words, structured data updated 13
During: twice a week until Jan 4
- Every Google profile checked for suggested edits, each one answered within 4 days 1
- Apple Business emails read and answered 14
- Sign up in the door and at the register, photo sent to the district manager
- Day before each holiday: three stores checked on Google Maps and Apple Maps
After: Monday, Jan 4
- Signs down
- Regular hours showing on every listing
- Hours sheet and log saved for next year
Next year the dates move and the routine stays the same. Running 10 or more stores? Take the fit check and see how Kai would keep every store’s hours right on every listing.

Questions
How do I set holiday hours on Google?
In your Business Profile, select Edit profile, then Hours, then Edit next to Special hours. Pick a date Google suggests or add your own, keep Closed checked or enter the open and close times, and select Save. For 10 or more stores, Business Profile Manager takes a spreadsheet with a Special hours column, matched to each store code.
What happens if I don’t set holiday hours on Google?
On the holidays Google lists, a warning may appear on your Business Profile telling shoppers your hours might differ. For US profiles, that list includes Thanksgiving, Black Friday, Christmas Eve, Christmas, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. Google suggests confirming holiday hours even when they match your regular hours, so shoppers can see they’re accurate.
How do I change business hours on Apple Maps?
Sign in to Apple Business, which replaced Apple Business Connect in April 2026, choose Brands, then Locations, and select the store. Edit Normal hours for everyday changes or Special hours for holidays, then select Save. For a holiday, enter the hours you are open, or mark the day closed. Apple asks that these hours match your website.
How do I add special hours on Yelp?
Log in to Yelp for Business on a computer or in the app, open Business Information (Biz Info in the app), and select Add special hours under Operation hours. Confirm the suggested holidays or add your own days, one day at a time. Saved days appear under Upcoming special hours, and shoppers see a note at the top of your Yelp page.
Can Google change my business hours without asking me?
Yes, sometimes. Google may notify you of a suggested edit and give you 4 days to accept or reject it. After that, it may publish the edit if public information, such as your website, supports it. Google may also apply some user edits without review when its policies require it. Check every profile at least twice a week in the holiday season.
